THE INFLUENCE OF FASHION MAGAZINES

Vogue was founded in 1892 by Arthur Baldwin Turnure. It is a fashion and lifestyle magazine and is published in 18 countries. Arthur Baldwin died in 1909 and Condé Nast picked it up. The first change Nast made was that Vogue appeared every two weeks instead of weekly. At first the magazine covers were illustrated with drawings, but as photography became more sophisticated in the early twentieth century, the fashion press used more and more photographs of new designs. Vogue functioned in America not only to provide sketches and patterns of fashions derived from Paris models, but also to promote French couture. People that were seen wearing Paris fashion gained a status as sophisticated and wealthy and perhaps able to travel to Paris.

It also acts as a record of the changes in cultural thinking, actions, dress and the changing roles of women, as well as the influences of politics and cultural ideas throughout the twentieth century. It continues to provide cultural information, portraits of artists, musicians, writers, and other influential people as well as the current fashion trends.

Many of the top photographers have worked for vogue such as Edward Steichen, Lee Miller, Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz and Herb Ritts ….ect

Harper’s Bazaar is an American fashion magazine, first published in 1867. It was launched as an upmarket weekly on 2 November 1867 by Harper Brothers, New York, under the title Harper's Bazaar. It featured high-quality black-and-white engravings of London and Paris fashions, altered slightly to suit American taste.

As the turn-of-the-century began in America, it began featuring both illustrations and photographs for its covers and inside features of high society and increasingly of fashion. during this late Victorian period, as the women’s suffrage movement was gaining momentum the introduction of more tailored dresses and jackets coincided with women’s new sense of feminism.

Like vogue it is also a record of events, trends music and politics.
